Around the Valley 11.19.20

November 19, 2020

Have you started your holiday decorating and shopping, neighbor? Many are us are starting earlier than normal in an effort to create some joy and normalcy, and that's exactly what this week's edition of NRV Macaroni Kid is about! Even if we are not celebrating in the same way, it does not mean the holidays will not be meaningful, and we've got oodles of suggestions for you to consider.

While it might be tempting to do all your shopping online at that online giant whose net worth has risen by over 48 billion in 2020 (yup, that's a "B" and that's a fact) our small businesses need our support more than ever.  For real.  We hope you'll commit to spending at least a portion of your holiday budget shopping locally, and if you love the ease of online, know some of them now offer online shopping and delivery! Not only do we help them stay open, but we pump money into our local economy.  For every $100 we spend in a locally owned store, $68 returned to our community. When we spend $100 in a national chain, only $43 stays here. When we shop online, nothing is returned (source: the 3/50 project).  That major online retailer does not need our help, but our small businesses do.

We have been busy creating a fabulous Holiday Gift Guide filled with gifts, experiences and even some services you might need around the holidays, and we hope you'll support these sponsors. Our sponsors make this free weekly resource possible, and we appreciate your support of them! You might even win it- when you shop at any of these local merchants, send an email to jenniferc@macaronikid.com with " I Shopped Local'' in the subject line. January 1 random.org will select a winner and we will reimburse you for a purchase up to $100! In past years we have reimbursed winners for gift certificates, apparel, toys, and even a Christmas tree!

This week inside Macaroni Kid:

Thanks for reading, and thanks for shopping local!
