Adapting Holiday Traditions To Spark Joy

By Erin and Sheila Real Estate Team November 18, 2020

Home has always been where the heart is. Yet in recent months, home is where everything is. Work, school, and entertainment have all happened within our four walls. Bedrooms became classrooms. Living rooms transformed into gyms. Patios became outdoor theaters. As the holiday season nears, we have a unique opportunity to reflect on what home truly means to us. Like you, we are thankful for many things including how our homes kept us safe, comforted, and strong during this challenging year.

We hope your family finds meaningful ways to celebrate the holidays, even as we adapt our plans for safety reasons.

Here are a few new ideas to spark gratitude, joy, and fun this holiday season:

  • Turn your family’s “I am thankful for...” craft or activity up a notch by mailing a handwritten note to those special people on your list. Friends, extended family, coaches, and teachers would love to know just how much you appreciate them and why.
  • Plan your favorite, time-tested holiday foods but consider adding a new dish or dessert. Call your cousin for her coveted sweet potato casserole recipe or FaceTime your spouse’s aunt and let the kids learn exactly how she makes those delicious pies. Search online for a new recipe that the whole family would like to try.
  • After your meal, play the salad bowl game at the table. Or host a “Memorabilia Event” where every family member grabs a special item from their past and takes turns telling the story behind it.
  • Take photos of how your family adapted your celebrations this year. We know that 2020 won’t soon be forgotten but don’t miss the chance to take pictures of your alfresco meals, socially distanced gatherings, or the laptops on our holiday tables with grandparents celebrating alongside us virtually. Soon these will be distant memories of a year that somehow, we made our way through, together.

As you relish your own family traditions and embark on some new ones, may you enjoy the comforts of home and hold close those that are dear to you. May we all be reminded that Dorothy had it right all along…there really is no place like home.
