If you enjoy a detective story filled with action, allow me to suggest a good one; Hold ‘em Close is the second novella in a series by Blacksburg author Guy Sims. The action starts immediately as we follow Big City Police onto a murder scene where we catch a glimpse of Big City dysfunction, and it never stops.
We meet Private Investigator Duke Denim as he is hired by a wealthy local business man to find his socialite wife Testy, who has disappeared from a charity event. Denim’s past as a police officer is alluded to, and we can assume his tendencies to solve issues with his fists rather than follow the rules play a part in his new career. Denim’s physical abilities serve him well as he navigates Big City to solve the case, especially since the police force holds no love for him.
The story is peppered with flavorful characters throughout. There’s Pompy, a self-absorbed bully who’s as dumb as a box of hammers but capable of murder; lovesick Luscious who adores him; Officers Bussem and Asphalt who use methods as questionable as our hero, plus other colorful Big City dwellers. Sims’ writing is witty and full of humor, and it’s easy to picture the story being made into a film due to rich descriptions. You'll have to read it yourself to find out what happens!
