Favorite Camping Locations in and Around the NRV Guide

By Shannon O'Donnell September 15, 2021

We enjoy summer camping, but there is something about fall camping that is so much better. Here are some of our favorite reasons to camp in the fall.

  • The cool crisp air in the mornings, enjoying a fresh cup of coffee.
  • A campfire at night with family and campground friends.
  • The sunrises and sunsets around the campground are phenomenal.
  • Lots of fall campground activities, like pumpkin contests, costume contests, hay rides, etc.
  • The rates are usually cheaper.

We are lucky we have so many camping spots and campgrounds in and around the New River Valley. Here are 6 of our favorites:

Alta Mons Campground

2842 Crockett Springs Road, Shawsville

(540) 268-2409

Alta Mons has 37 RV sites with water and electricity (and a dump station). We have 13 sites along the South Fork of the Roanoke River (The Riverside) and 24 sites along Purgatory Creek (The Wetlands). We also have 7 designated sites for tent camping on the Wetlands side. While at Alta Mons Campground visit the beautiful Stiles Falls.

Claytor Lake Campground

6620 Ben H. Bolen Drive, Dublin

There are marked hiking trails all over the Claytor Lake property. A sandy beach area is available in the summer and early fall. Boat, kayak and paddle board rentals are on site.

There is also a really cool website, kind of like Airbnb but this one has campsites. We found a property about 5 minutes from our house located on the New River through this site. The website for camping is called HIPCAMP
