Description

10th Annual, The Great Road Encampment

The 10th Annual “The Great Road Encampment” will be held on August 7th and 8th, 2021 at Eastern Montgomery Park in Elliston, Virginia. The Great Road was the main thoroughfare going west to the Frontier. It was traveled by the likes of George Washington, Daniel Boone, Andrew Lewis, William Preston, Adam Harman, the Ingles and Draper families. The Great Road Encampment celebrates the history of the road that provided a path through the Blue Ridge Mountains and eventually through Cumberland Gap to the Western frontier and honors all who passed through the Valleys of Southwest Virginia in the quest for a better life.

Each canvas tent set up in the park during The Great Road Encampment by colonial reenactors provides visitors with a glimpse of 18th century life. Living History demonstrations will be provided by 18th Century Reenactors, The West Virginia Company of Roger’s Rangers, a Detached Military Hospital and Medicine of the time.

Demonstrations include:

Flintlock Muskets, Camp Cooking, Knife and Tomahawk Throwing, Leather Work, Blacksmithing, 18th Century Clothing, Spinning, Weaving and more.
