The June Bug Center for Arts and Education (JBC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to providing music, performing arts, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) through ongoing afterschool programs, classes, summer camps and community theatre productions that are affordable to the New River Valley community.

Summer camps are one of our favorite times of the year! Summer camps are typically week-long camps for students of all ages from June to July. Here are the camps for the Summer of 2025! Provide your child with a packed lunch, we will not be able to provide lunches. 

Summer Camps 2025

Camp Name: Computer Camp 

Instructor:  Paul Tremblett 

Age Range: 9 - 12 

Price: $100 

Dates: June 2 - June 6, 2025

Description: Students will work on their own Piper computer for hands-on STEAM education. Each student will use their computer to go on Minecraft missions that will teach them how to build circuits that control LEDs, buzzers, and a variety of sensors. Students will also spend time learning to code using Pipercode.


Camp Name: Collaborative Storytelling Camp 

Instructor: Chris Bolduc

Age Range: 12 - 16

Price: $100

Dates: June 2 - June 6, 2025

Description: Students will spend the week learning a variety of role playing games that will inspire their imaginations and offer opportunities for creative problem solving, narrative exploration and improvised adventure. Player’s will embody an assortment of unusual characters with unique motivations, work together as a team to achieve narrative goals and help guide the stories with their own creative visions.


Camp Name: Robotics Club Camp

Instructor: Paul Tremblett 

Age Range: 11 - 16

Price: $100

Dates: June 9 - June 13, 2025 

Description: Students will use Mindstorm's EV3 curriculum to design, build, program, and test robots to do a variety of tasks. The Robotics program will engage students to become independent learners and develop skills in collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving.


Camp Name: Creative Writing

Instructor: June Bug Center Staff

Age Range: 13 - 18

Price: $100 

Dates: June 9 - June 13, 2025 

Description: The camp will focus on cultivating an understanding of creative writing. Throughout the course they will work to develop advanced writing skills with the hopes of generating a small writing portfolio. The hope is that each student will leave the camp more in touch with their external and internal world through the work they have created.


Camp Name: Junior Engineers

Instructor: Paul Tremblett

Age Range: 11 - 18

Price: $100 

Dates: June 16 - June 20, 2025

Description: Students will learn how microcontrollers are used to control devices such as LEDs, temperature and humidity sensors, infrared motion detectors, ultrasonic distance sensors, active and passive buzzers, water level detectors, and a variety of other sensors. Such sensors make up the Internet of Things (IoT) that is extending the traditional Internet. Students will build circuits containing these devices and write code that will make the devices work. They will program in PictoBlox, a visual programming tool and Python, one of the most popular and widely used programming languages.


Camp Name: Lego Club

Description: Students will get LEGO building challenges each day that will focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) designs. They will have creative freedom to try new designs and build their own creations!


Camp Name: Drama Society

Instructor: Valerie Moran

Age Range: 13 - 18 

Price: $100 

Dates: June 16 - June 20, 2025

Description: Students will learn about the basics of theater and exploring different theatrical genres. Students will either perform in a play or help backstage at the end of the session. This class is for all interests of theatre and will include lessons on acting, learning how to stage hand, practice with costume design, lessons on stage makeup, and even building a set! This class is designed to be a catch-all for aspiring theatre students.


Camp Name: Acting Out

Instructor: Jovi Jeppson

Age Range: 8 - 12

Dates: June 23 - June 27, 2025

Description: It's time to shine in our Acting Out program! Acting Out teaches students the basic skills and techniques in theatre performance. Students will learn public speaking, character work, and building confidence! Students will perform a play at the end of the camp.


Camp Name: Playwriting

Instructor: June Bug Center Staff

Age Range: 15 - 18

Dates: June 23 - June 27, 2025

Description: This week-long playwriting camp for teens (ages 15 - 18) explores how tone shapes character development, dialogue, and conflict in storytelling. Through film analysis, writing exercises, and peer feedback, students will craft a 10-minute play, culminating in a staged reading. By the end of the camp, students will have a strong foundation in playwriting, with a completed short play that showcases their storytelling skills.


Camp Name: Kids Who Code

Instructor: Paul Tremblett

Age Range: 10 - 13

Dates: June 23 - June 27, 2025

Description: This exciting, hands-on class, students will dive into Python, a powerful and versatile programming language widely used by developers, data scientists, and engineers at companies like Google, NASA, and Netflix. Python’s easy-to-read syntax makes it perfect for beginners, while its capabilities allow students to explore real-world applications, from creating games to analyzing data.


Camp Name: Percussion Camp

Instructor: June Bug Center

Age Range: 8 - 11 

Price: $85

Dates: June 30 - July 4, 2025

Description: This hands-on music camp introduces young musicians to rhythm and drumming techniques using bucket drums and tubano drums. Students will explore different percussion styles, work on group coordination, and perform a patriotic medley (or another themed piece). The camp can accommodate up to 16 students by alternating between instruments. No prior experience is required—just a love for making music!


Camp Name: Henna Design Camp

Instructor: June Bug Center

Age Range: 8 - 18

Price: $85

Dates: June 30 - July 3, 2025

Description: Our henna designs class will give your child a lesson in the culture surrounding henna art and designs. We will learn how to affordably make henna and build our own unique mandalas. Students will finish the class with their very own starter henna bag and the list of ingredients we used!

Camp Name: Musical Theatre for Kids

Description: Broadway for kids is designed for theater-loving kids, ages 8-12, to develop their confidence, character and presentation skills through ensemble performance. Campers learn acting, scene study, improvisation, music theory, singing and dancing, while building self-esteem, teamwork skills, and creative potential.


Camp Name: Floyd JAM Camp

Age Range: 8 - 18

Price: $100 

Dates: July 14 - July 18, 2025

Description: The Floyd "Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAMS)” program is a Crooked Road/JAM program that teaches students banjo, fiddle, mandolin, or guitar in the style of old-time music from our region.Students are allowed to choose from either a fiddle, guitar, mandolin, or banjo to learn on. All instruments are provided to enrolled students, which is included in the program tuition. The tuition fee is on a sliding scale based on household income; ensuring that no family is turned away.Every other class includes at least fifteen minutes of enrichment time, which introduces children to additional Appalachian culture and history. This is provided by visiting artists each week. Students then have an hour and a half of music instruction.


Camp Name: Musical Theatre Dance Camp

Description: Join us for a high-energy, four-day Musical Theatre Dance Camp! Students will learn the fundamentals of musical theatre dance while working together to choreograph a full routine to a popular Broadway number. Led by an experienced theatre dancer, this camp will focus on technique, expression, and storytelling through movement. Perfect for dancers of all levels, the camp will culminate in a final performance to showcase their hard work and creativity!


Camp Name: Blue Ridge Strings

Age Range: 8 - 18

Dates: June 9 - June 13, 2025

Description: The Blue Ridge Strings Program is introducing the study of classical music on stringed instruments to students ages 8-18. Through hands-on instruction and creative enrichment, the program supports growth and development by instilling a deep appreciation for music and specific skill in performance. As the program grows, it will expand into a small chamber group to perform classical music in Floyd.


Camp Name: Improv for Kids

Instructor: Casey Worley 

Age Range: 8 - 12

Price: $100 

Dates: July 7 - July 11, 2025

Description: Got a sense for humor and you’re ready to share with the world? Students will learn the basic rules of improv while expressing their creativity and humor. Improv games will be played while learning important techniques to improve their improvisational skills. Filled with lots of laughs, students will walk away with memories to last!
