The June Bug Center for Arts and Education (JBC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to providing music, performing arts, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) through ongoing afterschool programs, classes, summer camps and community theatre productions that are affordable to the New River Valley community.

Summer Camps 2024

Camp Name: Computer Camp

Dates: June 3rd - June 7th 

Description: In this one week summer camp students ages 9-12 will work on their own Piper computer for hands-on STEAM education. Each student will use their computer to go on Minecraft missions that will teach them how to build circuits that control LEDs, buzzers, and a variety of sensors. Students will also spend time learning to code using Pipercode.  


Camp Name: Lego Camp

Description: In this one week summer camp students ages 7 - 11 will get LEGO building challenges each week that will focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) designs. 


Camp Name: Robotics Camp

Description: In this one week summer camp students ages 10 - 14 will use Mindstorm's EV3 curriculum to design, build, program, and test robots to do a variety of tasks. The Robotics program will engage students to become independent learners and develop skills in collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving.


Camp Name: Acting Out

Description: It's time to shine in our Acting Out program! Acting Out teaches students the basic skills and techniques in theatre performance. Students will learn public speaking, character work, and building confidence! Students will perform a play at the end of the camp. Acting Out is partnered with the Floyd Community Theatre Guild (FCTG). 


Camp Name: Acting Methods

Instructor: Casey Worley

Age Range: 13 - 18

Dates: June 17th - June 21st 

Description: This class will encourage actors to connect with monologues and enable them to choose contemporary and classical monologues. We will learn what contrasting means and why it is essential. We will work to build audition techniques and choose monologues to build an audition portfolio and why it is necessary. The course will look at acting techniques (Chekhov, Hagen, and Stanisvlasky), and the work will look at their influence on today's acting methods. This course is encouraged (but not required) for students who want to pursue acting at the collegiate level. 

Special Request: Students must prepare a monologue before the class to send to the instructor. 


Camp Name: Junior Engineers

Dates: July 8th - July 12th 

Description: Students will learn how microcontrollers are used to control devices such as LEDs, temperature and humidity sensors, infrared motion detectors, ultrasonic distance sensors, active and passive buzzers, water level detectors, and a variety of other sensors. Such sensors make up the Internet of Things (IoT) that is extending the traditional Internet. Students will build circuits containing these devices and write code that will make the devices work. They will program in PictoBlox, a visual programming tool and Python, one of the most popular and widely used programming languages.


Camp Name: Creative Writing/Poetry

Description: The camp will focus on cultivating an understanding of writing short stories and multiple forms of poetry. Throughout the course they will work to develop advanced writing skills with the hopes of generating a small writing portfolio. The hope is that each student will leave the camp more in touch with their external and internal world through the work they have created. 


Camp Name: Broadway for Teens

Description: Camp Broadway is designed for theater-loving kids, ages 13 - 18, to develop their confidence, character and presentation skills through ensemble performance. Campers learn acting, scene study, improvisation, music theory, singing and dancing, while building self-esteem, teamwork skills, and creative potential.

Description: Drama Society is for our teens who want to delve deeper into the theater world. Students will learn about the basics of theater and exploring different theatrical genres. This class is for all interests of theatre and will include lessons on acting, learning how to stage hand, practice with costume design, lessons on stage makeup, and even building a set! This class is designed to be a catch-all for aspiring theatre students.


Camp Name: Blue Ridge Strings

Description: The Blue Ridge Strings Program is introducing the study of classical music on stringed instruments to students ages 8 - 18. Through hands-on instruction and creative enrichment, the program supports growth and development by instilling a deep appreciation for music and specific skill in performance. As the program grows, it will expand into a small chamber group to perform classical music in Floyd. 


Camp Name: Improv for Kids

Description: Got a sense for humor and you’re ready to share with the world? Students will learn the basic rules of improv while expressing their creativity and humor. Improv games will be played while learning important techniques to improve their improvisational skills. Filled with lots of laughs, students will walk away with memories to last!

Description: A glimpse into the afterschool program, this camp will teach students what JAMs after school would be like! The Floyd "Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)” program is a Crooked Road/JAM program that teaches students banjo, fiddle, or guitar in the style of old-time music from our region. Students are allowed to choose from either a fiddle, guitar, or banjo to learn on. All instruments are provided to enrolled students who need one.

Description: Melody Pals is a class where music is used as a tool to connect students in a harmonious journey of socialization and growth. It would be particularly beneficial to socialize homeschooled kids with public school kids, encouraging lifelong friendships. Through engaging musical activities, we will foster prosocial interactions and socialization skills, enhance interpersonal communication skills, and nurture emotional awareness, identification, and regulation. We encourage friendship, creativity, and self-expression, empowering young minds to thrive as part of a vibrant community.


Camp Name: Introduction to Movement

Description: This class will introduce actors to acting through movement. The work of Jacques Lacoq influences the course and will encourage actors to consider how movement is used on the stage. The course will examine mask techniques and non-human movement and will look at Commedia Dell'arte and Lazzi regarding the influence of the movement. Student work will culminate in a movement piece (devised theatre style) at the end of the week. 


Camp Name: Collaborative Storytelling 

Instructor: Chris Bolduc

Dates: July 8th - July 12th 

Description: This camp will utilize the popular tabletop role playing game Dungeons and Dragons to guide a group of students through the process of storytelling in a collaborative game of improvised adventure. We will use techniques from literature and the visual and performing arts to weave together an imaginary world in which to tell new stories. We will collaborate on a map of the world and each student will flesh out a corner that they call home. Students will learn how maps are made with an understanding of geography and cartographic elements. From this world, each student will bring forth a character based on the environments and cultural customs they choose. Students will spend time writing backstories, personal motivations and defining the visual look and style of their characters. Once the game begins, students will embody their characters, utilizing improvisation and acting, while venturing forth to confront challenges, have fun and achieve greatness.


Camp Name: Little Ear Worms

Description: An enriching program for little ears and caregivers, JBC Little Ear Worms is a course for the little ones in our community and their parents to learn singing, movement, storytelling, and instrument playing using fun creative music activities. This 50 minute class is a wonderful parent/guardian and child bonding experience while meeting friends and creating lifelong connections! This course is for little bugs aged 1 years old to 4 years old and parents/guardians of any age! The parent/guardian registered with the student will be required to attend class as well.

Description: Jitterbugs is the perfect way for children to learn about dance, make new friends, and create lasting memories. Designed for movers of all levels, our camps give students the opportunity to try a wide variety of styles! We strive to provide exceptional dance training in a welcoming, supportive atmosphere—promoting a strong work ethic, teamwork, and FUN! The styles of dance we aim to include: ballet, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Musical Theater, Lyrical, Contemporary, Creative Movement etc.
