Floyd Is Earth Month Central This April

Family-friendly events all month, ending with a big Earth Day celebration

If your family is ready to get outside a little more this spring, Floyd has something really special going on this April.

Instead of just celebrating Earth Day for one day, the community has turned it into a full month of simple, hands-on events that make it easy to get kids outside and connected to nature.

It’s not complicated or overplanned—which is honestly part of the appeal. You can show up, join in, and let the day unfold.

🌎 If You Just Want the Highlights:

• A full month of family-friendly outdoor events in Floyd
• Free puppet-making workshops kids can join
• Nature hikes and birding walks (no experience needed)
• A one-of-a-kind dandelion festival
• A big Earth Day celebration on April 26
• A giant puppet parade you can actually be part of

Throughout the month, Partnership for Floyd has teamed up with local groups to offer a mix of activities that feel approachable and fun—not like something you have to plan your whole week around.

You’ll find things like kids building puppets (with free supplies), casual nature walks, and opportunities to learn a little more about what’s growing and living right here in our region.

🌿 A Few Events to Try This Month:

• Puppet-making workshops leading up to the parade
• Guided birding and nature hikes with local experts
• A dandelion festival at Spikenard Honeybee Sanctuary
• Gardening and landscaping workshops for families
• Easy outdoor activities that don’t require a big time commitment

And then everything leads up to one big community day.

On Saturday, April 26, head to Warren G. Lineberry Park from 10 AM to 3 PM for a full Earth Day celebration.

It’s the kind of event where you can stay for a bit or end up spending most of the day without really planning to.

👨‍👩‍👧 What You’ll Find at the Earth Day Celebration:

• Crafts set up for kids of all ages
• Live music and a relaxed, community feel
• Local organizations sharing hands-on exhibits
• Nature walks and interactive activities
• A barter fair and plenty of space to just hang out

The highlight—and the part kids usually remember most—is the Procession of Appalachian Species from 12 to 2.

If you’ve never seen it, it’s a giant puppet parade led by Springhouse, with oversized puppets representing animals and plants from our region.

They’re creative, a little quirky, and really fun to see up close.

🎭 Don’t Just Watch the Parade—Join It:

• Help carry a puppet
• Walk along with the group
• Bring an instrument or just dance along
• Or simply jump in and be part of it

A quick heads up—everything is weather dependent, so it’s worth checking for updates if the forecast looks iffy.

If you’ve been looking for an easy way to get your kids outside more this spring, this is it. Start with one event, see how it goes, and maybe you’ll find yourself back again before the month is over.
