Safe and Sound Tip #3: When to Call a Repair Professional

By Erin & Sheila Real Estate Team December 23, 2021

From sagging gutters to leaky faucets, home repairs can seem endless. In our final tip for the “Keeping Your Home Safe and Sound” series, we’ll help you determine which repairs to tackle yourself and which ones may require professional expertise.

Minor repairs and routine maintenance are to be expected when owning a home. Many homeowners rely on a seasonal checklist but every home experiences the occasional running toilet or dysfunctional dishwasher. Luckily, a quick internet search can produce solid advice on basic home repairs. Stick to reliable sources like Bob Vila or Do It Yourself.com which provide step-by-step instructions. Many projects like drywall patch ups and clogged drains can be handled inexpensively with just a few tools.

But how do you know when you’re in over your head on home repairs? Ask yourself these three questions:

1. Is there a risk of personal injury? Major electrical work, ruptured pipes or a severely flooded basement are examples where your own safety may be in jeopardy. Seek a professional.

2. Am I comfortable with the tools and instructions? Some folks are okay learning on the fly while others prefer a bit more caution. If you feel out of your comfort zone, ask friends for a local handyman referral.

3. Could I make matters worse? If you or your favorite DIY-er is known for taking short cuts or leaving projects unfinished, then the answer is yes. Botched home repairs can lead to serious safety hazards like major leaks or fires. Don’t let a small problem turn into a disaster. When in doubt, sub it out.
