Do you have a child who is passionate about all creatures and would like nothing more than to spend the summer exploring the wild, wonderful, and weird creatures that fill the Earth? With our Early Explorers Summer Camp, they will embark on the exploration of a lifetime! They will learn about all different types of creatures and plants that call our planet home, and how their biology allows them to inhabit every corner of the planet.
Early Explorers is a recurring program at the Science Museum of Western Virginia and a favorite to staff and campers. This year’s program will feature Animal Demonstrations from our Living Collections Specialists, giving campers the chance to get up-close and personal with the amazing creatures housed at the museum. Demonstrations focus on identifying features that make these animals unique to humans and each other, including how these animals look and move. They will spend the week diving into the biology of different animals and plants to learn how they are perfectly adapted to survive in their respective habitats. Further, we will be joined by the Virginia Mineral Project for a fun-packed day with all types of rocks, minerals, and fossils. Guest speakers will describe and demonstrate methods of rock identification, explain how animals and plants contribute to their creation, and how to find marvelous minerals in your own backyard!

Animals, plants, their habitats, and so much more will be covered during this camp. Whether your child is an animal lover, avid planter, fossil hunter or just a nonstop mover, we have activities that will satisfy the learning styles and interests of each child. By the end of this week-long camp, campers will have the opportunity to craft a take-home activity based on what they learned. No matter the interests of your child, this camp is designed to be an engaging learning experience that encourages or uncovers their love of nature and inspires them to become future biologists!
