The Great Outdoors is Still Open

Summer Fun Is Yours At Camp Alta Mons

June 16, 2020

The great outdoors is still open! And we have plenty of it at Alta Mons! After a brief respite, Alta Mons is open again to the public for recreation, small group retreats, and camping.

Get your family out of the house for the weekend and come fish in the pond, play in the creek, and explore the woods. Our property is open to the public every day from dawn to dusk. We are located in Shawsville, Virginia between Christiansburg and Salem. Here are just a few things you could do in a weekend spent at Alta Mons:

  • Take a 3 mile hike to Stiles Falls, a beautiful 40 foot waterfall located on our property
  • Swim at the Intersection of the South Fork of the Roanoke River and Purgatory Creek
  • Explore the creek that runs through our property
  • Play basketball, volleyball, or soccer on our courts and fields (bring your own balls due to COVID-19 rules)
  • Fly a kite on a windy day
  • Try your hand at fishing in our catch and release pond
  • Walk around the wetlands to observe birds and wildlife
  • Pick wild blackberries and wineberries
  • Rent a shelter and host a cookout gathering with friends
  • Pose for new family photos
  • Roll out a blanket or use one of our public use tables for a picnic

If just a day away isn’t enough, bring your RV, pitch a tent, or rent one of our houses for a family getaway. Our campground is quiet and family-friendly. It’s a great place for an introductory camping experience. Let the outdoors be the classroom, playroom, and game cube. Give your kids the chance to stare up at the stars and catch lightning bugs. Build a fire, roast s’ mores, and enjoy time away from screens. Our campground has a clean bathroom complete with showers and a dishwashing area for tent campers.

Looking for more ways to engage with Alta Mons? Check out Camp @ Home! While we know it’s not a substitute for our normal summer camp program, we hope to give folks a way to connect with camp and do some activities at home. This 9-week program is already underway.
