Local, Grass-Fed Burgers and Beef Shares from Truman Hill Farms

Available April 11 for Burger and June for Beef Shares

March 24, 2020

Truman Hill Farm is a family-owned farm, operating since the 1800s. Over the generations, it has changed from tobacco production to orchards and brandy distilling, to timber and cattle. Since 2009 they have been raising grass-fed beef on chemical-free pastures with no antibiotics or artificial hormones. Truman Hill Farm has a strong conservation focus, with a permanent conservation easement, clean water protection practices, and have won awards for sustainable timber management.

Truman Hill Black Angus beef is 100% grass-fed and finished, dry aged, and locally processed.  Beef cuts can include filet mignon, NY strip, ribeye steak, sirloin steak, flatiron steak, chuck roast, rump roast, eye of round, London broil, and sirloin tip roast, boneless stew meat, and ground beef.  They are now taking orders for June and December pickups, with options including Whole, Half and Quarter Shares,

Truman Hill Farm is deeply conscious of food security and safety. The following updates address what we are doing to prepare for and manage the growing challenges we all face.

Beef Supply: With grocery stores stressed, food demand is very high. To respond, our farm can only accelerate production so much but do have four cattle ready to process. We'll have a fresh supply of premium burger and a few select steaks ready for pickups on April 11.  To reserve your order, follow this link.

For larger orders you can now reserve you own quarter, half, or whole beef to custom process to your specifications. Click here to order now and pick up in June or December.

Farm Prep: Being a grass-based farm, we aren't dependent on many supply chain inputs to produce our beef. We are stocking up on the natural supplements that enhance our herd health and performance, such as Thorvin organic kelp (Nordic seaweed full of important trace minerals) and Redmond salt. We're ordering lime (ground natural limestone) for the pastures this week and we have the tractor serviced and ready to work. We've done what we can to keep the farm running during potential disruptions.

Processing Sanitation: Our burger and steaks that we delivery monthly are processed at Piedmont Custom Meats, a USDA inspected plant. I toured their facilities in February and was extremely impressed by their technology, cleanliness, and protocols. A USDA inspector is on-site through every step of processing to assure food safety. As an example of their proactive approach, Piedmont Custom Meats recently shared the following update: PCM Response to Covid-19

Meat Handling and Delivery:  Owner David Hurt has a Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services meat handling license (yes, that is a real thing) which specifies safe and sanitary food handling practices. These steps are strictly followed with additional measures in light of Covid-19. Even though your beef is vacuum-sealed in secure packages, we will go the extra mile to make sure your order is safely stored and handled until it is delivered to you.

When we pick up beef at the plant, we handle it with nitrile gloves and pack it straight into sanitized coolers. From there we take it back to the farm where your order is placed directly into new bags labeled with your name and stored in clean freezers until delivery day.

To limit social interaction on the pickup dates, we can load your order directly into your car for a "drive through" pickup experience. No crowds, no shopping carts, no chance of anyone else to handle your food. Depending on customer needs and current recommendations at the time of pickup, we are exploring the option for home delivery. Look for future updates and feel free to call or email with any questions or concerns.

Truman Hill Farm is committed to continued production and distribution of local, safe, nutritious beef raised on a 100% grass diet.
