Meet Dr. Jennifer Steckenrider, Optometrist

By Dr. Steve Jacobs September 7, 2019

I couldn’t be more excited to introduce my new Associate, Dr. Jennifer Steckenrider.  Dr. S hails from Peru, Indiana, graduating from Taylor University in 2015.  She discovered her love for Optometry during a college semester in Ecuador, viewing first-hand vision care’s impact on real lives; something too easily taken for granted in much of the States.  Returning to Indiana University for Optometry School, she graduated first in her class this past spring – always a good way to start a career – woo-woo!!

Dr. S is especially grateful to her parents and brother for their love and support through life.  As part of a military family, she moved often early on, but once settled in IN, developed various hobbies.  The tendency to be in motion maybe (or maybe not) rubbed off, as one of her most favored became dancing – especially ballet – culminating with the privilege of playing Sleeping Beauty in her final high school recital.  Not that she’s all pirouettes and plies!   Time with her Dad on the links instilled a love of golf, earning her a spot on her high school team and still motivates her to get out whenever she can.

Art, specifically drawing and painting, is another passion.  And, surprise, surprise… she’s always loved drawing eyes!!  Who would have guessed?  Nine years in 4H provided plenty of opportunities to show her work in annual fairs, as well as a whole lot of fun.

Beyond hobbies, family time is very precious and very valued.  While an undergrad at Taylor, she met the love of her life, and now husband, Josiah.  They are THRILLED to finally be living in the same town after four years apart and are hoping to expand their family with a dog or cat soon (a baby’s not out of the question, but not in this year’s plans 😊).  Dr. S and Josiah enjoy volunteering in the community (they’ll fit right in at the office!!) and are newly minted members of Harvest Baptist Church in Blacksburg.

Dr. Steckenrider is excited to be living and practicing in such a beautiful area and to become part of such a wonderful community.  She is driven by the belief that the learning process never ends, and the desire to grow awareness of the importance of yearly eye examinations, especially for children.

A new technology offered that's wonderful for kids but great for folks of all ages, is RightEye visual tracking.  A specialized computer and infra-red lights allow eye movements to be monitored and Eye Q reports produced assessing Reading Efficiency, Functional Vision and Brain Health. How your eyes move tells a lot!!  Let us tell you about it!
