Mellow Mushroom was delighted when a local Girl Scout troop reached out to us to help their girls earn a very special badge. To receive the Simple Meals cooking badge, the girls from Troop 397, came in to learn a few new things from our kitchen manager, Steve Watkins.
Steve explained the importance of keeping food out of the “danger zone,” elaborating on how our ingredients must be kept at specific temperatures to prevent bacteria from growing. The girls learned about using thermometers to check the temperatures. After putting on their aprons, Mellow Mushroom hats, and gloves they were ready for a behind the scenes tour. They walked through the dish, dry storage, and prep areas, saw how food was stored in both the walk in cooler and freezer and then finished their tour in the kitchen. There they were able to check out the different lines where our kitchen staff work, as well as the four large pizza ovens. If you asked them, they might say the best part of the visit was the pizza! Before leaving, the girls enjoyed pizza for dinner and left with a smile and full bellies.
