For many of us, the holiday season is a time we look forward to every year. But for many local families it can be a stressful and upsetting time of year, where money is tight and needs are more prevalent than ever. By teaming up with the United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd and our Christmas assistance programs, we can help make a difference and restore some of the joy of the season to local families in need.
Toys from the Heart is an emergency Christmas assistance program that serves families with children under the age of 18 who have not previously been served by other community aid organizations. The program ensures families experiencing financial difficulties receive assistance during the winter holidays. Upon approval, families are able to shop for toys, sports equipment, school supplies, and personal items for their children. The program also offers families a Christmas tree, and a dinner box that includes all the holiday essentials, including a turkey or ham.
“Toys from the Heart is about more than toys. It’s about a mother’s relief in knowing her community cares about her and her family when she has experienced a stressful and hard year. It’s about a child being able to enjoy Christmas and not be worried because they see their parents upset. It’s about providing a warm holiday meal to a family who couldn’t otherwise afford one. Toys from the Heart is about the true meaning of the holiday season, and uniting to make a difference in our community.” stated Marcela Jara, Programs Coordinator at United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd.
This Christmas season there are many ways you can join in creating a memorable holiday for a child in need. Food and toy donations can be dropped-off from November 1st through December 15th at the United Way office in downtown Christiansburg, located at 111 West Main Street Monday through Thursday from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and Fridays from 8:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M.
