Cold and flu season are just around the corner, and prevention is always the best medicine. Be sure your children are eating healthy diets, getting enough sleep, and getting exercise as they get back into the school routine. Also emphasize the importance of good hand washing, covering sneezes and coughs with elbows, and not sharing drinks or water bottles with others at school.
Another important prevention strategy is the annual flu vaccine. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend all children over 6 months of age receive flu vaccines. Flu vaccination is especially important for children with any chronic medical problems like asthma, heart disease or immune suppression, and for children who take aspirin on a daily basis.
At New River Valley Pediatrics we offer flu vaccines for all ages (> 6 months). You can call and schedule a time to come in for one of these conveniently timed clinics at both our Radford and Blacksburg office locations. Patients have to be up to date on well care or have a well visit scheduled before the flu shot can be scheduled. and have a legal guardian present when the flu shot is given.
