MarketKids: Registration Now Open

A free project teaching children 6-12 what it takes to bring food to market

April 24, 2014
Launched in 2013 with the assistance of the Community Foundation and Sodexo, the MarketKids project provides children (ages 6 – 12) with a unique, free experience of what it takes to bring food to the market, from seeds to sales, taking them beyond basic gardening to a broader appreciation of the planning, skill-development, and discipline that go into having a market business. At monthly workshops, each child receives seeds, seedlings, gardening tools, and soil enhancements, as well as lessons and instructional materials. Participating children are encouraged to plant container or backyard gardens, with parental assistance, designed to meet their own individual capacity. At the end of the season, the children are invited to sell the produce from their gardens at the regular Saturday market. In addition, all children have the opportunity to expand their educational experiences by participating in a weekly service hour, where MarketKids will work to create a Hunger Relief Demonstration Garden at The Price House Nature Center in Blacskburg.
