United Way’s Day of Caring 2016 NEW RIVER VALLEY

September 22, 2016

Last week thirty-one individuals from local businesses, organizations and the general community volunteered their time as a part of United Way of Montgomery Radford and Floyd’s Day of Caring 2016 volunteer event.

Volunteer teams from local businesses and organizations paired up with non-profit agencies throughout the New River Valley such as Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread, Montgomery County Emergency Assistance, Valley Interfaith Child Care Center, and more. Day of Caring began with a kick-off breakfast at the United Way office with food generously donated by McDonald’s. After check in, volunteers spent from 9:00am – 12:00pm at their volunteer sites, assisting with hands-on projects such as arts and crafts with children, serving meals at a soup kitchen, sorting and organizing donations, and more. The United Way office even got a face lift, thanks to the volunteer landscaping team!

Ten businesses and organizations volunteered at the event, including; HHHunt, Revivicor, Beliveau, Corning, Warm Hearth, Community Health Center, Zoe’s Kitchen, National Bank of Blacksburg, Wine & Design, and SunTrust. “Day of Caring is a perfect example of the power our community has when we work together. Today’s volunteers now understand more about our community’s needs and will share their experiences with neighbors and friends. It is inspiring to see corporations and individuals from around the community willing to donate their time and energy during the work week to help local organizations. Day of Caring is an exciting event, we hope to see it continue to grow.” said Marcela Jara, Programs Coordinator of United Way Montgomery Radford and Floyd. Day of Caring promotes the spirit and value of volunteerism, increases the awareness of our local partner health and human services agencies, and demonstrates that neighbors helping neighbors can create positive change in our community!
