Have you ever enjoyed a drive in movie? At the last count I could find (June 2014) there were only 338 drive-in movie theaters left in the US. The Starlite Drive-In Theater in Christiansburg is only one of seven left in Virginia and the New River Valley is lucky to host this iconic bit of history. The Starlite opened in 1953 and has been owned and operated by the Beasley family ever since. The hot dogs are world famous- at least in the NRV! Just say 'hot dog' in the snack bar and you will get the real-deal dog, complete with Mrs. Beasley's original home made chili recipe!
To keep up with the times, The Starlite has added some new features that make it more user-friendly. Credit cards are now accepted at the front gate and the snack bar. An outside dining area was added complete with paved patio and picnic tables. In the past several years handicap spots were positioned close to the snack bar and a variety of food items were added to the menu. The Starlite converted to digital in 2012 and added the ability to listen to the movie on your vehicle sound system or a portable boom box by tuning into FM 90.3. And at only $6 for adults and $4 for children the Starlite is an affordable option for families.
In spite of the modern upgrades, when you drive into The Starlite compound you are driving back in time, where people gather for a unique outside experience. You will find all kinds of activity such as people sitting on chairs and blankets enjoying the music and a hot dog and fries with family and friends and kids playing, running, and throwing balls and Frisbees. The Starlite is pet friendly so you will even see an occasional happy dog! It's always best to arrive early, at 7 pm when the gates open, and enjoy the outdoor ambiance and hot dogs while waiting for the movie to start. Find the schedule on the Facebook page here.
