Around the Valley

by Jennifer Chasse

I hope you all enjoyed the winds this weekend Irene provided and your family and friends fared well.  I am so not missing Rhode Island right now.  Many of our friends and family are still without power!

Our housewarming party Gimme Shelter was  a lot of fun and e had such a  good time with the Rolling Stones theme!  Many of our guests could walk home which is always very cool.  Nostalgic Candy hooked us up with wax lips, candy cigarettes and licorice which were such a hit!  This is my third satisfied experience with Nostalgic Candy.  See cool lunchboxes here in the online store, and keep them in mind for Halloween!  Jayme at Unique Parties and Designs made me beautiful banners, signs and water bottle labels, and they were even better than I thought they would be!  It’s these little touches that really made things special and its nice to treat your guests to something out of the ordinary. unfortuanly I have more  ideas than time or talent, and that's where Jayme comes in.  She is a secret weapon for hosts!

This week we visited 2 great playgrounds in Blacksburg. First, the Girl Scouts had an ice cream social at Nellie’s Cave Park which was an ideal background.  Later in the week my children and I visited Hand in Hand playground which is always a hit. Listen up neighbors: we have lists of  New River Valley girls requesting Girl Scout troops, and no leaders to lead them.  Can you help?  Better yet, can you enlist a friend or two and help?  Believe me- having a terrific co-leader makes leading a troop a lot of reward for little output.  Just ask my co-leader Clare!  We also need a volunteer coordinator(s) to funnel new scouts into troops.  This position is usually busy only in the fall.

Heavener Hardware continues to replace all my ripped up screens, and we are just about finished the second floor.  I've been dropping one off each time I pick a screen up, and we will enjoy wide open windows minus the creatures for fall!  Heavener is one of my picks for the 3/50 project.  What are your 3 local stores you support faithfully?

I’m so looking forward to the long weekend.  We have a few fun places to vist in mind, one being the Virginia Safari Park which has been on our bucket list since we moved here over a year ago.  Is the Taubman Museum on your bucket list?  if not, add it and be sure to enter to win one of 2 free family passes to the Taubman Museum this week! Enter  on that page. There are lots of events on the calendar, and sincere thanks to those of you sending in fun events you find! Keep them coming and see you around the valley!

Professional Kid

by Hillary Isleib

I recently began my first post-graduate, professional job. Finally, after working diligently through high school to be accepted to a good college, working tirelessly to then attend a quality law school, and still working to pass the Virginia Bar Exam, I began my professional career as a new lawyer!

But, even as I entered this new phase in my adult life, I had the fantastic opportunity to relive special moments from my childhood that same week thanks to Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia and the Science Museum of Western Virginia ...

Food Allergy Awareness

A mom's point of view

It is hard enough dropping a child off for school, especially during the first few days in September...but add in a life-threatening food allergy and it becomes frightening. Leaving my soon-to-be 4 year old, will be something I am never 100% comfortable with...his peanut allergy is so severe that accidentally ingesting even 1/100th of a single peanut will send his body into anaphylactic shock and land him in the hospital.

Food allergies DO NOT run in our family, but it is now second nature for us. We ...

Special Kids... Special Needs

Milestones that matter

Last week, Marky was invited to a birthday party, for most parents with typical kids, this is not a big deal. For us, it is very exciting, it means that a child isn't affected by the fact that Marky may do things differently and can appreciate his charm and wit!

Well, this party brought us to another tremendous milestone, Marky went to the party, and we left! He stayed the 2 hours with his friends and he did fine! He followed guidelines, routines , sharing and even the opening of ...

Extreme Makeover - Lunchbox Edition

by Leanne Ely, C.N.C

When packing a lunch for your kids to take to school, don't even mention the word "lunchable" or I'll cringe. I don't care how easy it is to buy a pre-made and pre-packed lunch like that. I promise that all the junk, sugar, and fat you can find in those won't make them worth it. So ditch the Lunchables.

It's time for a makeover! And after those Lunchables, I want you to dispose of any fruit roll-ups, fruit gushers, and any other gummy fruit snack ...
