Around the Valley

by Jennifer Chasse

After two weeks in  New England visiting we are home and happy to be back in Virginia. Joe commented that is really seems like home, which seems right as we have lived here just about a year now. We even brought cousin Ethan with us to visit!  We arrived looking like a clown car with 5 people plus a dog and all our belongings in a Pruis, which was laughable except when we gassed up only once, in NY where gas cost $4.09. In RI, gas cost close to $4 most days and I was glad we took the Prius as the trip was over 3,000 miles.  It was cozy in the car, but a stop at Hershey’s Chocolate World got us all jazzed for  the ride home and we’ve been enjoying goodies ever since.

We kicked  off our homecoming by going tubing at The New River Junction.  What a perfect  way to cool off!  They graded the entrance to the river so it is easier to get in, and  the water was warm and only waist deep or less in most places.   It was Ethan’s first time tubing and a really a fun outing.  In fact, The Junction gave us four tickets to give away this week, so be sure to enter!

The boys and I went picking blackberries at 3 Birds Farm, and we made  berry coffee cake and have been just enjoying them straight! They also took an art class at Main Lee Art, as part of Children's Week which runs through Saturday.  My daughter meanwhile has been having a great time at drama camp this week.  The performance is Friday night and we can’t wait to see her!  This child is overly dramatic at the drop of a hat so hopefully we can channel some of that energy to good!  We also went to Hand in Hand playground for a bit which stays pretty shady even on hot days. Lisa brought the kids bowling at VA Tech inside Squires Hall while I caught up with my job.  Did you know the lanes and game room are open to the public?

I had just moved the week before we left for RI, so I’ve been trying to get organized and finish unpacking.  Some of our art and belongings were in storage the past year and its so good to see them again!  I love the layout of the new house, and slowly I am getting things done.  I'm a fresh air type of gal, but some of the  window screens have holes big enough for owls to fly in, so Heavener Hardwear is working on them for me. The ants are slowly losing in their battle to control the house, as I had left them “treats” all over before we left.

I hope you are enjoying NRV Macaroni Kid, and will take a moment to forward this newsletter to a friend and ask them to subscribe. Be sure to read my blog this week if you like naps as much as I do!  I’ll see you around the valley! I'm hoping to head out to the NRV Fair in Dublin  later this week and view all the 4H exhibits.

July 20th is national Moon Day!

July 20th is national Moon Day!  It commemorates the day in 1969 that Armstong and Aldrin landed on the moon and proclaimed "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind".

In President Kennedy's speech to Congress, on May 25, 1961, he expressed a concern that the United States was falling behind the Soviet Union in technology and prestige. He challenged the nation to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade.  On July 16, 1969, the Apollo 11 launched from ...

Geneology for Children

by Phyllis Ollinger

This wonderful family project will guide you to create your family history with your child(ren) in easy sections.  This newsletter contains one chapter (11), and if you look in the "Past NRV News" archives you will find past pieces of the history to print.

Phyllis suggests we store pages in a binder so we can always be adding to our work.  This is a great project to do over the summer as a family.

"Kids Helping in the Kitchen"

Danielle Moore Findlay, OH

Like all busy moms, I find myself relying on prepared and processed foods too much at times.  I decided to ignore the prices of fresh produce during my last supermarket visit and bring home some very nutritious choices for my family.  I didn't realize how much my kids had been missing these healthy foods until they started chopping up veggies immediately following breakfast.  To make it more fun, we found a serving platter from the back of the cabinet and my 9 year old decided to "make it fancy ...

Jelly Fish Stings

Macaroni Remedies

Jellyfish stings are a nuisance, plain and simple!  Of course they are a valuable part of the oceanic world, but for swimmers, well I am sure they could do without them!  Jellyfish are composed of a transparent gelatin material and most jellyfish have tentacles and stingers that emit venom when touched.  Swimmers should be prepared to treat an allergic reaction when a jellyfish sting occurs.
